Hey there! I'm John Ladley, Chief Engineer of WSIA. I am in
charge of the technical operation of this radio station, management
of daily operations, and I am also the Designated Chief Operator
(that means I'm the head DJ).
I started at WSIA as a student volunteer back in the early 1990's, and as
you can see my involvement has increased over the years. WSIA is very unique, as the students control all operations, budgets, programming and
policy-making. I am very proud of this station, not just as a technical
marvel but the people who run it as well. Although I work with college radio stations all over the
east coast, I think WSIA is staffed with some of the best students college
radio has ever seen.
All of us here like to consider WSIA the most technologically advanced
college radio station in the nation. Although we are only 10 watts, WSIA
can cover a large amount of the New York City metropolitan area (Staten
Island, Brooklyn, South Manhattan, eastern New Jersey, and even futher on a good day!)
First of all, we can be heard. This is quite the accomplishment,
since NYC is the most saturated radio market in the world. Sort of a
mice among giants kinda thing... We have accomplished this by using
the best signal processing equipment availible in the industry, and
making constant refinements to the on-air signal (this can involve
anything from low level programming of processors, complaining to the
phone company, or sacrificing small pets to various pagan gods).
Most of what is heard on WSIA during the program day is
from digital sources such as CDs,
digital CART machines, DAT players
and the like.
WSIA is one of the few college radio stations in the world with a fully
functional recording studio. Of course we record all of our on air
messages there (public service announcements, station promotions...), but that
is not why I am bragging about it. We use it
for recording music! We have a 24 channel studio envirionment that feeds directly to a
ProTools digital recording
& editing system. We have an decent list of outboard gear for mixdown
that I will not waste your time with here. WSIA certainly will not be
putting the major recording studios in the area out of business, but we
think our situation is very unique. Ask your local commercial radio
station if they have a recording studio that can cut an album. I bet
they can't.
WSIA uses Macintosh computers, because they RULE!
